What does a Green Park Governor do?

Governors are strategic and focus on the long-term vision for the school. They hold the headteacher to account for how the vision and strategy is implemented.

Headteachers are operational and focus on the day-to-day management of the school. They implement the vision and strategy, and report to governors on progress.

Governors work together to conduct their core functions:

  1. Ensuring there is clarity of vision, ethos, and strategic direction.

  2. Holding Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils and the performance management of staff.

  3. Overseeing the budget and spending and making sure its money is well spent.

  4. Ensuring the voices of parents, children and staff are heard.

Governors must also ensure that the governing body complies with all legal and statutory requirements. Governors should seek the advice of the clerk to the governing board and other professional advice as appropriate:

There are regular meetings each year including.

  • Three Full Board meetings (Safeguarding and finance is again reviewed)

  • Three Resource (Finance, Personnel) meetings

  • Three Standards (Curriculum, Pupils Progress, Attendance, Behaviour and Attitudes, Site and safety) meetings.

The need for various panels and additional meetings may arise as needed.

Governors are expected to:

  1. Train to develop knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis. (6 hours of CPD per year)

  2. Lead on at least one area of responsibility and to meet with that subject lead at least termly to question and dig deeper into that subject.

  3. All governors must receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection training (that includes online safety and prevent) and update their training yearly.

  4. Attend school events throughout the year and engage with parents.

  5. All governors must have an enhanced DBS check and a section 128 Check.

  • At least one governor must have training in Safer recruitment, Cyber security and Managing allegations.

  •  Act with integrity, objectivity, and honesty and in the best interests of the school.

  • Be open about the decisions they make and the actions they take and be prepared to explain their decisions and actions to interested parties.

Governance structure (10 Governors)

  • Headteacher

  • 4 Community Governors

  • LA Governor

  • Parent Governors

  • Staff Governor

We have a professional clerk for meetings who offers advice on procedures and legal requirements. You can also view our Governance and get more information about school using the DfE's 'Get Information about Schools' page using this link:  Get Information about Schools - GOV.UK

Governors Corner

'This year as the new chair of governors I have concentrated on getting to know the school. My links have included meeting school leaders to monitor provision and question leaders on Data Protection, Safeguarding, Staff and governor training, Monitoring and Filtering internet use and online safety, Attendance, The development of the website, Pupil Premium spending and provision.

These discussions have been open and honest, and I viewed evidence of robust practises and where the board could benefit from more information to enhance our understanding and questioning.

The board has completed a skills audit to identify and fill any training needs. The LA have also reviewed governance and rated us green, the highest category.

Safeguarding and Managing radicalisation training took place in July 2024, with Data Protection and Ofsted training completed in September 2024. Additional training is planned based on our needs.

The board have worked hard this year in line with the school vision ‘Learning for Life’ to upskill, communicate and become a new team as I endeavour to learn more about them, the school and school staff. We have a new website which is still a work in progress. Does it provide all the information you need? Drop us a note if we have missed something.

I am hoping that other governors will feedback on their link visits as the year continues. The areas governors are linked to may change as the needs of the children and school changes.'
